How to write it, step by step

  1. Write capital M and carry its ending stroke straight into the e.
  2. Join the rest of the letters without lifting your pencil: e, r, r, y, h, r, i, s, t, m, a and s.
  3. Let the y drop below the baseline and loop back up through it.
  4. When the words are finished, go back to dot the i and cross the t.
  5. Leave a gap about the width of a small o between words.

Tips for each letter

M
Making the humps all the same height. In school cursive the humps of M are about even; keep them tall.
e
Making the loop too big, so e looks like l. The loop stays below the midline.
r
Rounding the top so r looks like an i or an n. The small flat step at the top is what makes the r.
y
Leaving the loop open below the line. Bring the tail back up so it crosses at the baseline.
C
Leaving off the small starting loop at the top. It is what makes it a cursive C rather than a print C.
h
Making the hump too narrow, so h looks like an l and an i. Give the hump some width.
i
Stopping to dot the i in the middle of a word. Finish the word first, then dot.
s
Writing it like a print s. Cursive s is a point at the top and a small closed belly at the bottom.
t
Making t as tall as l, or adding a loop. Cursive t is shorter than the tall letters and has no loop.
m
Adding a fourth hump or losing one. Cursive m has three humps (three slants down); n has two.
a
Leaving the top open, so a looks like u. Close the circle before you slant down.
