Number tracing worksheets

Pick a number from 0 to 20 for big dotted numbers to trace, the number word, a ten frame and the steps to write it. Or print all 21 numbers at once.

All numbers at once

The numbers tracing set has every number from 0 to 20, one page each, in a single PDF.

How children learn to write numbers

  1. Count first. Children should count real objects before they write the number.
  2. 1 to 5. Start with 1, the easiest, and the numbers they meet most.
  3. 6 to 10. Watch for 6 and 9 mix-ups, and 7 written backwards.
  4. The teens. Children often write 61 for 16 because they hear the 6 first. The 1 always comes first.

Backwards numbers are normal until about age 7. Practise the starting point and direction rather than correcting the finished shape.

Questions parents ask

Which numbers are written backwards most often?

2, 3, 5, 7 and 9. They all have a curve or line that should face right, and children often turn it the other way.

At what age should my child write numbers?

Most children write 1 to 10 between ages 4 and 5, and up to 20 in kindergarten.
